An ex -CNN Ankra said that the relentless coverage of the Russian collusion research network during the first term of President Trump helped accelerate his “death spiral” which cost “30, 40% of the country.”
Dave Briggs, the former CNN’s “first” amffriration from 2017 to 2019, said in a podcast that the network alienated much of Middle Ages with its non-probe approach to the Russians helped Trump defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
He said he faced his then network strategy.
“Every day he came in and discussed with the powers that he was obsessed with Russia’s research when no one knows the East coast, he gave a damn research,” Briggs told the ex -CNN’s CNN, Alisyn Cameroon and Dylan Byers, at the podcast “Health with Alisyn & Dave.”
“And for me, it was when they lost 30, 40% of the country, and I think the ratings supported it.”
Briggs added that “it was this obsession” the one that turned off the viewers.
“When I would talk to my friends from all over the country and I mean, not on the east coast, outside of this bubble in which we all exist; they would always say,” I just want to know what happens in the world, “said Briggs.
“This is what they would tell me every day, and that’s what drove them away from CNN.”
A source of the CNN said in the publication: “It is disappointing to see people so naive talk about the media and where they worked, all to try to get a profit.”
In 2017, special counselor Robert Mueller launched an investigation that examined Russian interference in the 2016 United States election, links between the Trump and Russia campaign and the possible obstruction of justice by Trump.
He concluded that Russia interfered in the election in a “broad and systematic” way to help Trump, but did not find enough evidence to load the campaign with criminal conspiracy.
At that time, CNN was led by Jeff Zucker, who oversaw a boom in dramatic qualifications during Trump’s first term, with 2017 marking his most exposed year, and the vision remained strong during the 2020 election.
By the beginning of 2021, however, the ratings dropped abruptly after Trump left office, as the primary vision fell by 36% in a period of weeks.
A year later, Zucker resigned as President of CNN after not revealing a romantic relationship with Allison Gollust, executive of the CNN, violating the policy of the company.
The decrease in evaluations worsened after the re -election of Trump 2024.
At the end of 2024, the CNN primary audience fell to less than 420,000 spectators, the lowest in almost 30 years.
In May 2025, the network had an average of only 405,000 viewers in primary time, with only 74,000 in the key of 25 to 54 years.
CNN is experiencing a significant restructuring, as it faces the levels of historical qualifications, the decrease in revenue and a change of online property.
By the beginning of 2025, the network fired 6% of its workforce and is now preparing measures to reduce deeper costs, including salary reductions and the policies of closer expenses.
CEO Mark Thompson is changing to an investment of $ 70 million in digital, with a $ 1 billion in revenue for 2030.
Meanwhile, anxiety staff have intensified ahead of Warner Bros. CNN spin-off. Discovery in a new unit called Global Networks, directed by Gunnar Wiedenfels of Cost -Cutter.
With the cable vision that is reduced to the entire industry, CNN’s future is still uncertain, as it tries to reinvent itself for the streaming age.
The publication has sought comments from CNN and Zucker.
